| Neighborhoods Urge Fulton DA to Investigate Cheating | ||
This is hood stuff and needs to go out to all membership. Very, very important. Buckhead Neighborhoods urge Fulton DA to investigate Atlanta schools test cheating « Previous Story <http://www.reporternewspapers.net/2010/08/12/cafe-pharr-owner-enjoys-taste-success/> By John Schaffner johnschaffner @ reporternewspapers . net <javascript:DeCryptX('kpiotdibggofsAsfqpsufsofxtqbqfst/ofu')> The Buckhead Council of Neighborhoods voted unanimously Thursday night, Aug. 12, to urge the Fulton County District Attorney to launch a criminal investigation into the alleged cheating at possibly 58 schools in the Atlanta Public School system on the 2009 Criterion Referenced Competency Exam. BCN representatives listened to almost more than an hour of discussion by APS Board member Nancy Meister, of Buckhead, and Ponder Harrison, an independent member of the “blue ribbon commission” that investigated the alleged cheating scandal, as well as comments from BCN members and three reported representatives of the NAACP. After Meister and Harrison had left the meeting, the new Atlanta Police Zone 2 Community Prosecutor Hannah Chung, who works for the Fulton DA’s office, told BCN members that the DA’s office has a Public Integrity Unit, which deals with issues such as those involving the Atlanta Public Schools cheating probe. BCN representatives voiced their concerns that the “blue ribbon commission’s” report was a sham, because key members of the commission do millions of dollars of business with the school system, and questioned the response of the school board and school administration to the report. Superintendent Beverley Hall reported that she had transferred the principals of 12 of the schools considered most problematic in the test score erasures scandal and had referred 108 staff members to a state review commission for further investigation. The BCN then voted to urge Fulton District Attorney Paul Howard to proceed with a full-blown investigation of the alleged CRCT test cheating and asked Chung to deliver that message to the DA. Attorney Glenn Delk, who represents the Historic Brookhaven Neighborhood and heads up the BCN’s Education Committee, urged the investigation by the Fulton DA because he has subpoena powers and the “blue ribbon commission” appointed by the school board did not have those powers, which limited their investigatory powers. What started out as a presentation by APS Board Member Meister and Harrison about the report presented by the commission Aug. 2 and Meister’s vote that day not to accept the report, quickly turned into a venting of outrage by the BCN members and guests regarding the level of education of APS youth, the taxpayers’ cost for that education and the administrative abilities of APS Superintendent Dr. Beverly Hall. Delk, who is working with the three NAACP representatives who attended the meeting to open a charter school in southeast Atlanta, also passed out copies at the meeting of a resolution he plans to introduce at next month’s BCN meeting that will call APS to put the administration and operation of the school system up for bid among outside professional education companies as well as present superintendent, Dr. Hall beginning with the 2011-2012 school year. If passed by the BCN next month, the resolution would be presented to the APS board and administration for consideration and execution. It could result in the present administration of the Atlanta Public Schools system turning over operations control to an outside vendor. -- more » |

| Mary Norwood to Seek Fulton County Commission Chairmanship | ||
From AJC Mary must get 22,598 signatures of registered Fulton County voters to be on the ballot as an independent in Nov. Petitions are presently circulating. Mary Norwood to run for Fulton County chairmanship — as an independent 8:16 am April 19, 2010, by Jim Galloway We knew that former Atlanta mayoral candidate Mary Norwood was running for something, given her recent Tweets about Fulton County taxation. But we didn’t expect this. Phil Kent, that white-haired Georgia Gangster, reports that, at a Johns Creek GOP event last night, Norwood took to the microphone to announce that she’s running against John Eaves for chairmanship of the Fulton County Commission — as an independent. Throughout her mayoral campaign, Norwood maintained she was neither blue nor red, but purple – though by the runoff, pressed by Democrat Kasim Reed, she was forced to emphasize her support for Barack Obama in the ‘08 presidential contest. Even so, state Democratic officials declared her a member of the GOP. The result was that many Republicans were just as miffed. Such are the hazards of life in the middle. |

| Milton County Proposal Dead for this Year | ||
Milton County proposal dead for the year at state CapitolThe Atlanta Journal-Constitution 12:25 a.m. Saturday, March 27, 2010 A controversial proposal to carve Milton County out of north Fulton County died in the state House of Representatives late Friday night, unable to get the two-thirds vote it needed to stay alive. House Speaker Pro Tem Jan Jones (R-Milton) decided just before midnight not to bring House Resolution 21 to a floor vote. Jones, the proposal’s key supporter in the House, said proponents were within three or four votes of the 120 they needed in the 180-member chamber. “We waited and tried to get the votes as long as we could,” Jones told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution at 11:55 p.m. “We came up a few votes short.” Jones said she will reintroduce the bill next year. The proposal needed a two-thirds vote of the House because it would require amending the state constitution. “This is just the beginning,” Jones said as the Legislature prepared to adjourn on Crossover Day, the day bills must pass one chamber or languish for the year. “Fulton County has been put on notice.” Milton County supporters have argued that the Fulton County Board of Commissioners is unresponsive to the needs of north Fulton residents and wasteful with their tax dollars. But opponents said splitting the county would hurt the city of Atlanta and what remained of Fulton County. That, they said, could hurt the entire region. Milton supporters argued the cities of Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Milton, Mountain Park, Roswell and Sandy Springs should be permitted to form their own county if voters first approved the idea in a referendum. “There’s a lack of proper governance in [Fulton] County,” state Rep. Wendell Willard (R- Sandy Springs) said earlier this month at a hearing on the proposal. “And that’s the fuel that drives this engine.” Milton and Campbell counties were merged with Fulton during the Great Depression as a cost-cutting measure. Jones’ bill would have permitted voters to re-create historically merged counties. Democratic opponents blasted the proposal, and Rep. Joe Heckstall (D-East Point) argued the proposal has racial underpinnings -- south Fulton is majority black; north Fulton is majority white. Jones’ proposal also ran into opposition from one member of her own party. Republican Majority Whip Ed Lindsey (R-Atlanta) opposed the part of the plan that would let only residents of the proposed county vote on its creation during a second vote. Most of Lindsey’s district is in Buckhead, which would not be part of the new county. “She’s fighting very hard to reform a county she believes is out of control,” Lindsey said. “I’m fighting very hard to reform a county that I believe is out of control. I just want to make sure my constituents are at the table and have a say in those reforms.” Fulton County Commission Chairman John Eaves had called the 1932 merger of Fulton with Milton a “marriage” that Milton County proponents are trying to tear apart. “This divorce would have a disastrous impact on all parties involved,” Eaves said. “It’s a lose-lose situation.” But Roswell Mayor Jere Wood had argued that divorce is sometimes necessary. In this case, he said, it might cause some short-term pain, but the long-term benefits would be worth it. “The divorce is because it’s not working out,” said Wood, a major backer of Milton County whose city would be within its boundaries. “I see irreconcilable differences.” State Rep. Roger Bruce (D-Atlanta) said that instead of creating a new county lawmakers should come together to reform the Fulton County Commission. Bruce, chairman of the Fulton County Legislative Delegation, has criticized a major study on the proposed county by the University of Georgia and Georgia State University. The study, he said, only looked at the feasibility of creating Milton County and neglected to study the impact the new county would have on Atlanta and the remnants of Fulton County.

| Advice from Better Business Bureau on Preventing Fraud by Bogus Census Workers | ||
The following advice was received from APD's Crime Prevention Unit: Be cautious about giving information to Census workers. so as not to become a victim of fraud or identity theft. Atlanta Better Business Bureau offers the following advice: If a U.S Census worker knocks on your door, they will have a badge, a handheld device, a Census Bureau Canvas Bag and a confidentiality notice. Ask to see their identification and their badge before answering their questions. You should never invite anyone you don't know into your home. Census workers are currently only knocking on doors to verify address information. Do not give your Social Security Number, credit card, or banking information to anyone, even if they claim to need it for the U.S Census REMEMBER, NO MATTER WHAT THEY ASK, YOU REALLY ONLY NEED TO TELL THEM HOW MANY PEOPLE LIVE AT YOUR ADDRESS. While the Census Bureau might ask for basic financial information, such as a salary range, YOU DON'T HAVE TO ANSWER ANYTHING AT ALL ABOUT YOUR FINANCIAL SITUATION. The Census Bureau will not ask for Social Security, bank account, or credit card numbers, nor will their employees solicit donations. ANYONE ASKING FOR THAT INFORMATION IS NOT WITH THE CENSUS BUREAU. The Census Bureau is not working with Acorn on gathering this information. No Acorn worker should approach you saying he/she is with the Census Bureau Eventually, Census workers may contact you by telephone, mail, or in person at home. The Census Bureau will NOT contact you by Email, so be on the lookout for Email scams impersonating the Census Never click on a link or open any attachments in an Email that is supposedly from the U.S. Census Bureau Atlanta Police Department--Crime Prevention Unit
